What Is a Socratic
AI Tutor?

The Socratic method is 2,400 years old. AI is making it available to every student, simultaneously.

Teacher and student in Socratic dialogue

When students arrive at understanding through their own reasoning, that understanding sticks.

Most students have experienced the following: they ask a question, get an answer, write it down, and promptly forget it. The answer was never theirs — it was handed to them. Socrates understood this 2,400 years ago. His method wasn’t to lecture — it was to ask questions that forced students to examine their own thinking. The problem, historically, has been scale. One teacher can run a Socratic dialogue with a small seminar group. They cannot simultaneously conduct 30 individual Socratic dialogues. Until now.

"The Socratic Method. Scaled to every student. 24/7."

— The design principle behind Secondary AI’s question-based assistant

What Is It?

Not an answer machine. An inquiry engine.

Standard AI Chatbot

When a student asks "What causes inflation?", a standard AI chatbot delivers a textbook definition. The student reads it, closes the tab, and retains nothing. The cognitive work was done by the AI, not the student.

Socratic AI Tutor

The same question gets a response like: "Interesting question. What do you think happens to the price of apples if there are suddenly far fewer apples available and the same number of hungry people?" The student has to think. The AI adapts based on their response.

The Framework

Four principles of
genuine Socratic AI.

Elenchus (Cross-Examination)

The AI challenges student assertions, revealing contradictions or gaps in their reasoning. "You said X — but doesn't that conflict with what you told me earlier about Y?"

Aporia (Productive Confusion)

The AI deliberately creates moments of uncertainty to motivate deeper inquiry. Discomfort in thinking is a feature, not a bug.

Maieutics (Midwifery)

The AI helps students “give birth” to ideas already latent in their own minds — drawing out knowledge rather than depositing it.

Dialectic (Back-and-Forth)

The exchange is a genuine dialogue, not a monologue. Each student response shapes the AI's next move.

Classroom Example

Watch how the AI
never gives the answer.

A Grade 10 biology session. Every response keeps the cognitive load on the student.

S
What does the mitochondria do?
AI
Great question. Before I answer that — what do you think a cell needs in order to do work? Think about what it takes to power any machine.
S
Energy? Like fuel?
AI
Exactly. So if a cell needs energy to function, what do you think the mitochondria’s job might be, given that we often call it the “powerhouse of the cell”?
S
It makes energy?
AI
You’re close! It converts energy from one form to another — specifically from glucose into a usable form called ATP. What do you think happens to a cell that doesn’t have functioning mitochondria?

The Learning Science

Why this approach builds durable understanding.

The research on learning is clear: students retain information better when they actively process it. Passive receipt of information — reading a definition, watching a video — produces shallow encoding. Active retrieval and reasoning produces deep encoding. For secondary students, Socratic dialogue also builds skills beyond subject knowledge: tolerating ambiguity, identifying the limits of their own understanding, constructing arguments with evidence, and recognising logical inconsistencies.

Every Secondary AI session is logged. Teachers can read the transcripts to see exactly how each student reasoned through the material — a level of insight into student thinking that’s impossible to get from a written test alone.
